History of Caloundra Queensland 4551
The town of Caloundra, located 72 km north of central Brisbane, is named for the river that flows through the area. The name is believed to have been derived from Aboriginal, as the beech trees in this region of the state are plentiful. Despite its location, the area did not see much growth until the 1910s, when the nearby Campbellville and Mellum Creek hotels were built. Then, in 1905 and 1906, the town’s first hotels opened and it became a major tourist destination.
In 1882, William Landsborough purchased 2,372 acres of land and began grazing sheep there. This property was subdivided into four blocks, which were sold off to tourists and local residents. In 1884, the first hotel in Caloundra was opened on Shelly Beach. In 1889, a school was opened in the town and the first lighthouse was erected. In the early 1900s, the city grew and became an important coastal defense location. Then, in the 1930s, a picture theatre opened and the town was transformed into a small resort and Caloundra Service Area.
